There comes a point in your work life when you start to hate your job, maybe you hate one aspect or the other of your job, but you start feeling that you are not completely involved in that job. You find yourself always complaining about your job and you are not enjoying your work anymore. It can be difficult to handle such feelings of hatred towards your work, that is why in this article we will learn what to do when you hate your job.
You may hate your job or a part of your job for number of reasons like
- You always keep complaining about your boss.
- You start to feel that the workload is a lot more than what you can handle.
- There is a lot of conflict between the employees at your workplace.
- You don’t believe in your professional ideals anymore and are often irritated by the clients and coworkers.
- You no more care about the quality of your work and you feel unproductive at the end of the day.
- You feel stuck and frustrated at your workplace.
- You might start to hate the company you work for.
- The work environment doesn’t suit you anymore and you are finding yourself tired, exhausted, and stressed after a day at work.
- You don’t like the industry in which you work anymore and you have developed an interest in a different career field and so on…
What to Do When You Hate Your Job
1. Do not share your thoughts
If you feel like you don’t like your job, or hate it, keep that feeling to yourself and do not talk about it to anyone, especially any of your co-workers. Share your thoughts with your close friends and family and control the urge to post them out on social media platforms as through that platform the information could reach the managers and the supervisors of the company.
Even if they are not added with you on these media platforms, there are so many other ways for employers to see your social media, and if you aren’t careful with that, you may put yourself in trouble.
By keeping your thoughts to yourself by not sharing them with anyone else, you will ample time to think about what to do further and how to wisely plan your exit from the firm as soon as you get the right time to do so. You will have time to think about different options without being influences by someone else’s opinions on what you should do in such situations.
2. Think thoroughly before deciding to quit
It is completely normal to have thoughts about immediately quitting your job as soon as you discover that you hate it. But take your time, think before you just act on that feeling. The industry is currently facing a lot of competition and no other employer is to waiting for you with a position to hand it to you. So, you cannot really afford to quit your job until and unless you have a backup option ready.
The frustration of the job can be hard to handle, but just quitting your job won’t change how you are feeling. Consider different alternatives patiently as you do not want to regret any kind of decision you make. But if you already have a plan in mind, and you know what you are going to do after you will quit the job, then go for it and work for your plan if that is what you want to actually pursue.
3. Start making a strategy for the job search
if you have decided to quit your job, and your decision is final then start finding a better way to be employed by figuring out what sort of career options and field would make you fulfilled in ways that your former job failed to. Remember, this time, find yourself a job that you genuinely love and you will never find yourself working a single day in your life. While making a strategy for your job search, keep few points in your mind:
- Search for a job for which you have relevant skills that have helped you in your past job to achieve positive results and gain job fulfillment.
- Make a note of your strengths and weaknesses while searching for the job.
- Study the environment that you want to work in.
If while doing your job search, you realize that you do not belong to the industry that you are working in currently, you have an option to switch your career in which your skills and interests align properly. Our goal is to search for a job that has factors that your former job was not able to fulfill, so develop a strategy accordingly.
Use the right tools and techniques and expand your network through platforms like LinkedIn, and keep your profile up to date so that prospective employers can contact you if they find your job profile appealing. Build an up-to-date resume and send that job application.
Use the most out of the tools and techniques to speed up your job search approach. Networking will be a great help in the search process, so make sure you keep working on expanding your network and making new business contacts with the different people from the industry of your interests.
In this way you can create your own brand which can be beneficial for you in the future.
4. Other alternatives than quitting
You may want to consider some other alternatives than quitting your job like finding the solutions for the reasons that make you want to quit your job. So, take time for self-reflection and before you make a decision, anticipate other possible solutions.
There can be chances where you can make your job more bearable like if there is some work that you absolutely hate to do, you can talk it out to the head or the manager to delegate that work to someone else in return for some other work to do. Focus on the tasks that you really enjoy doing.
For example, if you hate your job because your boss is always complaining about the kind of work you do and you are not really on good terms with your boss, then you may want to consider working on your relationship with your boss so that he can understand and you can actually develop a way to communicate about what you are feeling to him.
Or if you have a workplace conflict with a co-worker, you can try and resolve the conflict and work it out or you can even set some boundaries and avoid chances of such conflicts occurring in the future.
Just because you hate certain aspects of your job, don’t just decide to quit because quitting is not the only option, so start putting your needs first and set clear boundaries and work on projects and take on tasks that you enjoy.
5. Learn to deal with change and uncertainty
You may start to hate your job when there has been an uncomfortable change in the leadership position and the leader is more of an autocrat. The common excuse that the people who hate their job give is that ‘I hate my boss’ or ‘I hate my new manager.’
Such dynamism should always be expected in the workplace. Not everything in the organization will be like you want it to be, there can be the uncertainty of some events that you never saw coming, but learn to deal with it because that is the only way you can cope up with your job when you cannot afford to quit it.
In fact, you should grab such opportunities to make a connection with your new boss by impressing him with your work by improving your collaboration with your boss.
6. Talk to your manager
It is nothing better than clearing it out with your manager. If you are on good terms with your manager. If you have been recently hired by the company and you have started to hate your job, as a new hire, you have the leverage to discuss with the employer anything that you dislike about the organization, if you have issues related to the work environment or an employee or some money-related issue than have a talk with your manager so that he/she can help you out.
By asking what you need from your job, you can reverse any aspect that you hate about your job. Even if you want to resign from your job, talk to your manager first.
7. Switch your perspective
Look for the positive aspects of your job and focus on the attributes that are more fulfilling, it will help you in switching your perspective and change all the negative aspects of it into positive ones and you will start to feel more grateful towards your job.
Try and figure out what is working rather than focusing on what is not because maybe you are working with a great company where you have the potential for advancement and maybe there are great opportunities to learn from the business professional in the future with this company.
8. Take the final decision and act on it
If you have been stagnant for quite some time, that is, you have been performing the same duties every day with no change in any of your work, then maybe you need a change. One of the reasons for which you hate your job can be that either it is too easy or it is getting too hard. You feel bored when you are not challenged up to an extent in your job, and you feel like a failure when you cannot do a certain task because of the complexity of a certain task. So, you might feel like itching for new and better opportunities.
In our opinion, the job you do should keep challenging you, a job that you thrive to wake up for every day is the job that you should be doing. Learn to love your job and make sure the job is something that motivates you instead of burning you out.
Try and make your job more creative by asking for new projects and assignments to make it more interesting for you and in this way you can exit yourself from the loophole of your hate for your job. If you feel undervalued or feel that your work and efforts are being overlooked at your workplace then maybe quitting is the best option for you as you should work at a place where you are appreciated and your work is valued.
Work in a company where your values can align with those of the company. We experience, we learn, and our values keep changing, and that is why we feel that this is not something that I want to do which is completely normal. Start looking for opportunities that can fulfill your work aspirations.
